Don't Change Your Mind: Holding Fast to Faith in Challenging Times
In a world of constant change and upheaval, it's easy to find our faith shaken. When circumstances spiral out of our control and problems seem to multiply, we might be tempted to doubt God's goodness or question His plan. But today, we're reminded of a powerful truth: we must not change our minds about God, no matter what we face.
Consider the story of the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15:21-28. This woman, desperate for her daughter's healing, approached Jesus with unwavering determination. Despite initial silence, dismissal, and even what seemed like rejection, she refused to give up. Her persistence and faith ultimately moved Jesus to declare, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted."
This account teaches us several crucial lessons about maintaining our faith in the face of adversity:
1. Circumstances change, but God doesn't
Our lives can be turned upside down in an instant. What was normal yesterday might become chaotic today. Yet, amid these shifts, we must remember that God remains constant. As the hymn reminds us, "On Christ, the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand." Our circumstances may change, but our foundation in Christ should not.
2. Delayed answers don't mean denied requests
Sometimes, like the Canaanite woman, we might cry out to God and be met with silence. We might feel ignored or overlooked. But God's silence doesn't equate to His absence or indifference. Often, these moments of perceived inaction are tests of our faith and opportunities for growth.
3. Others' opinions shouldn't derail our faith
The disciples tried to send the woman away, deeming her a nuisance. Similarly, we might face discouragement or skepticism from others about our faith or our prayers. But we must remember that our relationship with God is personal. Don't let the doubts or dismissals of others shake your conviction.
4. Worship is a powerful response to challenges
When Jesus seemed to rebuff her, the Canaanite woman's response was to worship. This teaches us a profound truth: when faced with difficulty, turning to praise can realign our hearts and invite God's presence into our circumstances.
5. God's love is not limited by our categories
Jesus initially stated His mission was to the "lost sheep of Israel," but the woman's faith moved Him to extend His grace beyond those boundaries. This reminds us that God's love and power are not confined by our human divisions or expectations.
6. Persistence in prayer is powerful
The woman's refusal to give up, even in the face of apparent rejection, ultimately led to her daughter's healing. This echoes Jesus' teaching to "ask, seek, and knock" continually. Our persistent prayers demonstrate our faith and can move the heart of God.
As we navigate our own challenging times, we must hold fast to these truths. The world around us may be in turmoil, but our faith should remain unshaken. When executive orders are signed that seem to threaten our way of life, when the media broadcasts discouraging news, or when personal trials overwhelm us, we have a choice to make. Will we allow these external factors to erode our trust in God, or will we, like the Canaanite woman, press in even harder?
Remember Job, who faced an onslaught of trials one after another. Despite losing everything, his response was, "The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised" (Job 1:21). This steadfast faith in the face of overwhelming adversity is what we're called to emulate.
In times of uncertainty, we must anchor ourselves to the unchanging truths of who God is:
- God is sovereign and in control, even when things seem chaotic.
- God's plan is bigger than our problems and our limited perspective.
- God sees through time and eternity, while we only see the present moment.
- God's love for us is personal and unwavering.
When we feel tempted to doubt or give up, we can draw strength from the hymn:
"When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil.
On Christ, the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand."
Our faith must be built on the solid foundation of Christ, not on the shifting sands of circumstances or public opinion. We must decide, like Joshua, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15).
This unwavering faith doesn't mean we won't face doubts or struggles. Even in our moments of weakness, we can cry out like the father in Mark 9:24, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" God honors honest faith, even when it's mixed with human frailty.
As we face the challenges of our time, let's remember that our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness. We dare not trust the sweetest frame but wholly lean on Jesus' name. This means:
1. Continuing to pray persistently, even when answers seem delayed.
2. Worshiping God in the midst of our trials, acknowledging His goodness despite our circumstances.
3. Surrounding ourselves with a community of believers who can encourage us when our faith wavers.
4. Studying God's Word to remind ourselves of His faithfulness throughout history.
5. Serving others, which can often put our own troubles in perspective and allow us to be the hands and feet of Christ.
In conclusion, as we navigate the storms of life, let us hold fast to our faith. Like the Canaanite woman, may we persist in seeking Jesus, even when the path seems difficult. May we have the courage to declare, "I'm not changing my mind about God, no matter what comes my way." For in the end, it is this unwavering faith that will see us through the darkest nights and into the bright dawn of God's promises fulfilled.
